Photo Journal
Printing my work
I printed a photography book of a recent trip to North Carolina. I’m calling it a photo journal.
The name doesn’t really matter, but I’ve been considering different ways of archiving and experiencing my work. A journal feels more intentional and curated than an album, but without the formality or weight of a photo book. It feels right for this type of project.
The design process was similar to my previous books, so I won’t get into it here. The main difference is that I used a different printer – an online company called Mixam that specializes in zines and offers a variety of printing options.
I chose an 8×10 format because it let my images print at 4×6, similar to the family photo albums I grew up with. The cover is a 100lb satin with soft-touch lamination, and the interior pages are 80lb uncoated text. It’s perfect bound, which gives the journal a clean, finished feel. Overall it has a textured and natural quality that I’m really pleased with.
For those who are curious, all images are JPEGs, mostly straight out of camera, using my Fuji X100V – which has long been my favorite camera for personal work.
Below are a few spreads from the final journal.
